St John's Cultural Program 2010

 
     
  

 

St. John’s church Toorak has a long history in hosting musical and cultural events. After several highly successful such events in recent years, including organ recitals, concerts, and  lectures, St. John’s has organised the    interesting and engaging program of cultural events described below. 

  
  

2010 PROGRAM
OF EVENTS  

7.30pm Friday 26th February Thomas Heywood in concert  
Thomas Heywood will dazzle on the St. John’s Hill organ, playing the famous Rondo from  Mozart’s Horn Concerto, Tchaikovsky's celebrated Polonaise from Eugene Onégin, and works by Bach and Guilmant - all viewable on a large screen.
Venue: St. John’s church
Entry: $25 per person ($20 concession) 

7.30pm Thursday 18th March 
Life and Death in Ancient Rome  
The Revd Dr Bradly Billings  will give an illustrated talk on daily life (and death) in the cities of the Roman world. Dr Billings has  published several papers on the social history of Roman cities and has toured the sites as part of his research.      
Venue: The Buxton Hall
Entry: $10 per person 

2pm Saturday 17th April  
Talented young performers  
A chance to hear some of the musicians of the future, now. These young performers are currently University students. The recital will include Liszt’s sonata for piano in B minor.  Venue: St. John’s church
Entry: $10 per person
  

7.30pm Thursday 13th May  
In the footsteps of T.E. Lawrence   
Dr. Andrew Jamieson is Lecturer in Classics & Archaeology at the University of Melbourne and Curator of antiquities in the Ian Potter Museum of Art. His talk will report on recent excavations and discoveries in the Upper Euphrates region. 
Venue: The Buxton Hall
Entry: $10 per person
 
Dr Jamieson’s talk is accompanied by a tour of the Ian Potter museum’s collections at
2pm Saturday 29th May ($10 donation)   

 7.30pm Thursday 15th July  
Crusader Castles    
An address by Professor Frank Sear, Lecturer in Classics & Archaeology at the University of Melbourne, on the castles of the crusaders. 
Venue: The Buxton Hall
Entry: $10 per person
 

2pm Sunday July 25th
Merlyn Quaife recital  
Merlyn Quaife is a distinguished soprano, having appeared as a soloist with all the major Australian Symphony orchestras as well as various opera companies. Her performance will give an insight into the way of pilgrimage along the famous Santiago de Compostela trail, through the mediums of song and poetry. The recital coincides with St. James day.

Entry: $25 per person ($20 concession)

7.30pm Thursday 12th August   
Mansions of Toorak  
Professor Miles Lewis, of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Melbourne, will give an address illustrated by pictures, on some of the great mansions and landmarks of the Toorak area. 
Venue: The Buxton Hall
Entry: $10 per person
 

2pm Sunday 26th September
John Donne: poet and priest   
Readings from the poetry of John Donne, one of the great metaphysical poets and most influential figures in English literature, with descriptions of his life as a poet and priest of the Church of England.                                
Venue: St. John’s church
                             
Entry: by donation


7.30pm Saturday 13th November 
Gilbert & Sullivan Concert   

A gala end to the year’s program. The Savoy Opera company present songs by Gilbert & Sullivan, performed in full costume with commentary throughout. A great night of fun and entertainment for all ages.                                                                
Venue: The Buxton Hall
                              
Entry: $20 per person (non members)

MEMBERSHIP & SUBSCRIPTIONS  

St. John’s invites all interested persons to take out a seasonal membership at a cost of $10 per adult (children free). Members are provided with advance notice and details of each event. Members also attend the end of year gala Gilbert & Sullivan concert free of charge (non members pay $20 each).
