Our parish is part of the Anglican Church of Australia and is located within the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne. The Anglican Church is perhaps best thought of as the 'family' of churches having their origins in the Church of England and which maintain some links to the Church of England and its leader, the Archbishop of Canterbury (presently the Most Rev'd Dr Rowan Williams). We speak of being 'in communion' with all of those parishes and dioceses which share the same link (hence the term 'Anglican Communion' is used often of our community). There are about 70 million Anglicans worldwide, making the Anglican Communion the third largest Christian denomination worldwide after the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. The Anglican Church of Australia, whilst maintaining these historic links with the Church of England, is a church in its own right with its own Archbishops and Bishops, constitution, and system of governance. | |||
