St Paul and the Corinthians: Three Case Studies

The First Letter of St Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians is one of the longest and most important letters in the New Testament, and contains some of the most memorable and enduring of passages (e.g. the ‘chapter on love’, 1 Cor 13). The letter also raises numerous issues of ongoing significance and importance for Christians everywhere and in all ages – such as, the observance of the Lord’s Supper, the use and misuse of spiritual gifts, and the dangers of schism. In this year’s ecumenical Lenten Study program, three New Testament scholars will address three such issues in their biblical setting, and seek to bring the Apostle’s wisdom into the modern world.

Study One

Wednesday 10^th March (6pm fellowship meal; 7.30pm study)

Venue: St John’s Anglican Church (meal in the hall, study in the church)

The Eucharist in Corinth and in Early Christianity

Presenter: The Revd Dr Andrew McGowan

Dr McGowan is Warden of Trinity College at the University of Melbourne and Associate Professor of Theology at Trinity College Theological School. Dr McGowan has lectured at Harvard and Yale, and was Associate Professor at the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, before returning to Trinity. He has written and published widely on the theme of the Eucharist in early Christianity.

Study Two

Wednesday 17^th March (6pm fellowship meal; 7.30pm study)

Venue: St Peter’s Catholic Church

A Gifted Community: Spiritual Gifts at Corinth

Presenter: The Revd Dr John Capper

John Capper is Dean of Tabor College Victoria and teaches there mainly in the area of theology. He has a PhD from Cambridge University (on the ‘theology of joy’) and is an ordained Anglican priest. He has served the church in a variety of pastoral roles, as well as teaching in several theological colleges in both England and Australia.

Wednesday 24^th March (6pm fellowship meal; 7.30pm study)

Venue: Toorak Uniting Church

Sects in the City: rival groups in Corinthian Christianity

Presenter: The Revd Dr Bradly Billings

Brad is vicar of St John’s Anglican Church Toorak and has previously been Adjunct Lecturer at Trinity College Theological School. He has completed a doctoral thesis in early Christianity and has published several articles in academic journals, the most recent being an essay on the infancy narrative in St Luke’s Gospel.

Confirmation 10am Sunday 18th April

Expressions of interest for Confirmation in the Anglican Church are being sought now. A Confirmation service will take place at 10am on Sunday 18th April at St. John's with Bishop Paul Paul White presiding. Candidates will usually be aged 12-16 years. Preparation is flexible and arranged in consultation with the fmailies concerned.
